COLOMBO FORT CAFE

Jan. 10, 2018, 5:21 p.m.

Good morning guys!

Coming to you with two reviews in three days and I've got plenty more lined up for you all. I've been invited to almost every single restaurant of Harpo's and not a single one has disappointed me. I had never been to Colombo fort cafe but my sister had been here before and she really liked it. I heard so many good things about it from friends and family so I was excited to check it out myself. I have to say even though it falls under the 'cafe' category it's a very fancy one indeed.

Lychee & Regular Mojito - We decided to try the virgin mojitos at Colombo fort cafe. I had never had a lychee mojito in my life and I have never seen a lychee on a mojito menu before. My sister ordered the regular so that we could compare the basic taste of their mojito. I would definitely recommend you to go for a flavored mojito as it's always a better choice. I've had a passion fruit, blueberry and strawberry mojito before but I think the lychee is one of my favorites! it reminded me of a drink I use to have growing up, unless my parents brought me with lychee mojitos. The both of us preferred the lychee so I highly recommend it, definite thumbs up! Rs.775

Calamari Rings - This is a starter loved by most people unless you're allergic to seafood of course. The calamari rings are super chunky and crispy and it comes with a really good sauce. Theres also batter fried chunks of bell peppers, so it compliments the calamari well. This is a starter that needs to be shared by two as it can be quite filling, unless you're having it as a main dish. We really enjoyed this starter, I mean anything battered is always a YES from us!

Bourbon Pork Chops - This is a dish of two succulent pan seared chops, with bourbon peach sauce & grilled vegetables. From the meat lovers who have visited Colombo fort cafe before said that they have some of the best pork dishes. Can you guess who ordered this dish? CORRECT! My sister loves pork chops so she decided to go with this. First impressions were that the dish looks absolutely delicious! I don't eat meat and even I wanted to have a piece of that. The grilled vegetables and the peach sauce was absolutely exquisite and my sister really did enjoy the pork chops as well. I think the portions at Colombo fort cafe are generous and quite filling which makes the dish completely worth it. Rs.1925

Parmesan Crusted King Prawns - It was a debate between this dish and the chili prawn alioli. I struggled so much that I had to ask the waiter which one I should go with, because apparently he knows my taste buds the best. He suggested the king prawns as it comes with rice and said it would be a perfect meal for lunch. This is a dish of three king sized tiger prawns topped with a parmesan crust, drizzled with chili oil, served with rice & greens. The parmesan crusted king prawns looked absolutely heavenly with a side of beans and white rice. I have to say that I'm a person who does not enjoy dry food as much, I always need some gravy or sauce with my food. Combining the prawns, beans and rice together would have been a little better if there was a little more gravy/sauce to compliment the three together. I did ask the waiter if there was anything that I could have to go with the dish and he was kind enough to bring me two varieties of chili sauces. The king prawns are a definite 10/10 from me though! Next time I visit the cafe I'm going to try the chili prawn alioli. Rs.2650

Crème Brûlèe - As usual we were utterly stuffed at this point but like I said in my previous review, I could not disappoint my readers who love their desserts. There were nine desserts to chose from the menu so we decided to go with something I have not reviewed before. The lucky winner was the crème brûlèe and we were so happy that they had one last one available. If you are visiting Colombo fort cafe just to try this I recommend you calling and checking if there are any available to avoid disappointment. This was one of my favorite desserts I've had in my life, ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Not overpoweringly sweet, did not lack sweetness, the top was glazed perfectly and cracked easily. I think this dessert deserves a 12/10 because even though we could not eat anymore we forced ourselves to finish this before we left. Rs.400

I also have to mention that Colombo fort cafe had some of the best staff I've seen in Sri Lanka. They were not only polite to us but polite to everyone else who walked in. They would greet guests outside the restaurant and direct them to a table which I thought was very polite. Some restaurants in Sri Lanka the staff don't even acknowledge you and you end up having to wave your hand to get their attention. It was nice that they made us feel at home and comfortable which always makes our dinning experience a pleasant one. I hope you all enjoyed this review and thank you for all the love you guys have been sending my way. You guys make all of this so much better!

CAFE BEVERLY

Jan. 8, 2018, 1:48 p.m.

Hi guys, I hope all of you are having a lovely start to 2018 so far! Cafe Beverly was the first review I've done for this year and I was glad we started off with a good one. After I shared some of the dishes with you all on my Instagram stories I received a lot of inquiries about most of the dishes we ordered. Welcome to my blog to all my new readers, I usually talk about each dish individually starting from top to bottom so if you wish to scroll up to have a look at the picture it's in the exact same order. The first thing I have to say is that I love the menu at cafe Beverly! They have a wide variety of Thai food, Indian, Italian and sea food dishes to chose from. So its a great place to visit with your friends if you all crave different flavors and dishes.

Hot Chocolate & Smoothie - Lately I've been wanting to try the hot chocolate everywhere I went so that I know where the best place in Colombo is for hot chocolate. The hot chocolate at cafe Beverly is served more like a latte and it comes with a cookie which I liked. I personally like my hot chocolate in a cup rather than a tall glass, maybe that's just me. However, it was really good and I really liked the cookie on the side. Nayan personalized his smoothie with a blend of strawberry and banana. I think being able to personalize your smoothie is great because I know so many who dislike certain fruits but who love smoothies. This is a great way to add only the fruits you love in to a perfect smoothie. They also have a wide variety of drinks and detoxing drinks that I highly recommend!

Prawn Tower - For starters we decided to go with something I could have tried as well, so we decided to try the prawn tower. This appetizer comes with a lot of bell peppers, chopped prawns and a mix of other vegetables. It was a really good appetizer but if you want something with a lot of prawns you might be disappointed as there is a higher number of vegetables than prawns. It was still a very good dish that Nayan really enjoyed and the plating was simply beautiful!

Herb infused chicken breast - This dish was ordered by Nayan and he had such a hard time choosing from all the delicious meat options on the menu. He finally decided to go with chicken as I know that's a common meat eaten by many. I don't know if you saw the video of him enjoying this dish but he really was over joyed with his order. The portion of the mash potato and chicken are quite generous and absolutely worth the price! It also comes with a side salad and topped with two sauces which I highly recommend for you to try. I have to say the plating is a lot different to what I remember when I first visited Cafe Beverly and I think each and every dish looks absolutely delicious!

Prawn Pad Thai -  I have never reviewed a pad Thai for you guys so I decided to order it at cafe Beverly. This dish comes with prawns and chicken but I requested to try only the prawns. If you are allergic to prawns you can request just the chicken. My first impressions of the dish was that it looked beautiful and I also noticed that it was quite reddish in color. I have had many pad Thai dishes before and it is usually brownish in color so I was keen on tasting this dish. It was sweeter than any pad Thai I've had before and tasted slightly saucy. I think the sauce was what gave it the reddish color and the sweet and sour flavor. It was slightly overpowering which makes it hard to finish the dish considering that the portion is quite large as well. The waiter did inform us that this dish would be sweet but I thought it would be like a normal pad Thai. If you're someone who enjoys sweet and sour noodles then this dish is perfect for you. I did enjoy the prawns a lot, it was my favorite part of this Pad Thai.

Chocolate Mousse and Cake - For dessert we decided to share the chocolate mousse even though we were so full! I know some of you want me to review dessert as well so I couldn't let you down this time. This mousse is a 10/10 from me and Nayan! Super portion with layers, topped with a chocolate chip plate and a cherry. A definite must try when you visit cafe Beverly. There was also a surprise cake organized for me by the team and it was the sweetest thing ever! I did not expect anything and it was definitely a pleasant surprise with an absolutely delicious cake!I cant thank cafe Beverly enough for such a kind gesture, I truly did appreciate it.

Another cool thing about visiting cafe Beverly is that it's a part of a department store with ladies, gents and kids clothes. You can either shop before you dine at the cafe or after, what's better than shopping and eating in one place?! I hope you guys enjoyed this review and I cant wait to hear about the dishes you tried at cafe Beverly. I hope you guys have a wonderful week ahead!

ONE UP - ALL DAY BREAKFAST

Jan. 11, 2017, 5:49 a.m.

(Margot Robbie - Brioche French Toast)

(Mr.Benny - Eggs Benedict With Smoked Salmon)

                                                                     (Neopolitan - Granola Bowl)

I need to start off my first cafe review by saying that OneUp is the best breakfast cafe I've been to! I've been wanting to try this place for so long and I'm so glad that I did! We started off with a mango, banana and coconut smoothie, avocado juice and a hot chocolate to get an idea of different varieties on the menu. The hot chocolate was excellent, and the juice and smoothie was so fresh and filling  with no additional sugar added.

The first thing I noticed about the french toast was how beautiful the plating was! The flowers added the perfect touch and it was almost a pity to eat. Apart from the dish being delicious and not overpoweringly sweet the portion is quite generous as well!

I initially ordered Mr,Benny with crab but I'm so happy that the crab was unavailable at that particular time and I opted for the smoked salmon instead. I am not a fan of salmon in general but I really wanted to try the Mr.Benny at OneUp. This was the best dish out of everything we ordered! The way the flavors are combined is exquisite! You know when something taste so good you close your eyes for a few seconds, followed by a slow head shake or an "mmmmm"? This was one of those dishes. I haven't eaten meat in about four years and the smoked salmon reminded me of the taste of bacon. Everything about this dish was perfect, I can't wait to have this again soon!

The granola bowl is definitely a healthier option on the menu and is a little bowl of color and joy! Out of everything we ordered I would rate the food from best being Mr. Benny, French toast and the granola bowl. OneUp definitely had more variety on the menu that I cannot wait to try, these are just a few that we decided to check out and we were beyond happy with everything! It's approximately 2000 rupees per person for a delicious and super filling breakfast or brunch and is definitely my favorite breakfast cafe in town!
